San Diego Comic-Con 2010

Okay guys, now I know you may think it's a little early to be thinking this far ahead, but would anyone be up for Comic-Con 2010 (July 22-25)? It's best to arrange these sort of things far in advance to guarantee the cheapest accomodation/flights.

So first of all, you may be wondering, what is San Diego Comic Con?

Well it's only the biggest and most awesome comic convention in the world.

As for where it is, it's in San Diego - ie, California USA.

Pricing is around about 65 pounds for a 4 day all access ticket. Yes it sounds steep. But it will be worth it. Here's why:

COMICS: Yes, the most obvious feature of a comic convention, many of the best comic artists and writers will be there, probably with presentations and features on their latest work.

DRESSING UP: You're going to see some of the best cosplayers at San Diego - I'm talking actually realistic looking costumes, of anime, comic, film and tv characters.

PANELS: There will be many interview panels at Comic-Con focusing on many of the upcoming events/tv series in the future. In the past many exclusive television premiers have been shown at comic-con (Lost, Heroes, Chuck etc).

GAMES: Got your attention now? Often many upcoming games will have booths at Comic-Con (I believe L4D2 may have in the last one).

FILMS: There'll be an independent film festival at Comic-Con, as well as many 'how-tos' for independent film making.

ANIME: Lots of screening of anime, as well as possibly other anime related panels.

ART: Tons of original comic/sci fi/fantasy artist and art.

SHOPS: There's going to be a heck of a lot of shit to buy. A heck of a lot. I went to a tiny Sci-Fi Convention run by a local comic shop (in Tulsa, Oklahoma) and it had tons of stuff that I wanted.


Comic-Con will be all sorts of epic. Also, I'm going to attempt to get free tickets to 'The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien', in my opinion, the funniest late night show on american tv, for maybe the day before or after Comic-con (which would mean we get to go to the universal studios lot in LA).

I've already bought a ticket, like the crazy person I am. Once we find out how many want to go, we can talk travel/accommodation arrangements (if anyone else does want to go ). There's bound to be a YMCA in San Diego right? There's a good chance that I will stay in America afterwards so I can go to Tulsa and visit my relatives (people are welcome to come there if they like, but I won't be able to guarantee accommodation or that anything interesting is there).

How much are the tickets though?!?!?!?!!?!?

yeah, i always wanted to go to an american one, but the ticket price aint the problem, its the flights and accom which could cost up to £500

Hmm, plane tickets will be the most expensive. I would like to go... maybe as the L4D crew again : D

Well if we could get three or four people who definitely want to go to San Diego Comic-Con, then we should go for it, otherwise I guess we could look closer afield. Much less exciting than San Diego though . We could always get some TF2 costumes going . I'm not sure if I'd want to be the hunter again in California in the summer, and I'm not a good fit for any of the survivors.

So anyway, if anyone else is interested post up. I know it won't be cheap, but I think it's worth digging into those savings for.

Like has been mentioned, it's getting there that's the problem. My rent will go up and my loan will go down next year, so honestly I think the cost might be a bit prohibitive.

HOWEVER, GENTS. If people don't mind slogging down to the faraway land of London next year in October there's always what's basically our smaller, shitter version of Comic-Con, THE MCM EXPO! It's always on a Saturday, mid-October, and frankly I think it would be beautiful like one of those really beautiful things. Like pants planted on a grave, it will be a pretty thing now to be happy.

It also means a thriving costume-wearing horde for us to blend into like the Valvefags we are.

Yeah, but maybe we should go as something that'll stand out from the crowd... Like a peggle ball?

if you want to go as a sphere, you go right ahead. Have fun in your crowded, crowded con centre. XD

you are aware that the london expo also does one in may, not just october?

I am indeed, but I'm keeping in mind that most if not all of us will have exams in May.

I'm up for the london one both times. Since I don't really move anywhere at all.

San Diago is another matter.

I'm willing to concede and go to the London ones if we can get people organised. I'm actually closer to London at home than in Edinburgh (surprise, surprise). Also, if its on a weekend, I may be able to get us all free accomodation as my dad has an apartment in London. If its a weekday, then he's likely to be there, so there's probably only room for one other person. To clarify, if we don't get too hung up on personal space, I think we could fit 6 people in there, sleeping semi-comfortably. If my Dad and his partner are there however, it's unfair to them if we take up all the floor space.

Personal space, pffft. Who needs it. XD

Well, if someone's willing to check around everyone at the next CGS meeting - I would but I won't be around, what a big surprise - and just gauge general interest in going to the Expo and which one, then we can go from there.

I still need to go shopping for my sniper clothes. A small CGS excursion maybe?


BTW, my Dad said he'd be alright with 3 people (not including me) staying at his flat, but he said he would help look for cheap accomodation in London if necessary (I guess since he knows the area better).

I have a few rooms that are about a 20 minute train ride form paddington, btw, so I can accomodate a fair few people (It's abotu 6 last time I checked).

Nearer the time, fo' sho', but bear in mind we will have to trawl some junk places to get mats for weapons etc., so y'know, will need a dedicated few for that.

I'd be willing to share out the costs of the accomodation to make it more fair on the people who don't get to stay at my dads flat tbh

He's sitting across from me and he has, in fact, dibsed engie.

But yeah, I'm gunna be a good social secretary and make A PLAN.

And travel is cheap as fuck, so dw about that - last time I got peeps from London up here it cost them about £15 each way on a bus.
